Distinctive signs of the city Bruges are its canals, the winding streets that preserve their past splendor and the houses with stepped brick facades. The center is occupied by the Main Square (the Grote Markt) with the Market (Hallen) that made Bruges the main warehouse and woolen center of the Hanseatic cities with a cloth industry that reached its peak during the 14th and 15th centuries.
