The Desamparados Station functioned as part of the route to travel to the central Andes of Peru. It was rebuilt and reopened in 1912 due to a previous fire. Its current design was made by the architect Rafael Marquina, and follows a neoclassical model, with some details of art nouveau. To carry out this task, it was necessary to channel the waters of the Rimac River and give up the land gained for this work. Imported materials and elements were used.
In 1972, the station was declared a National Monument. In 2008, the Ministry of Transport transferred the facilities of the station to the Ministry of Education as a loan, which would be enabled to host the educational and cultural space that it currently houses: the House of Peruvian Literature.
