[Vigilant]

Man in profile riding a donkey towards the left, his torso is turned to his left. He wears a white uniform with red ribbon on the sides of the pants and a chap on the leg. It also features a blue cape with a red border around the neck, shoes with spurs, and a brown hat with the word "police..." on it.
Also known as "night watchman", this character was generally of humble origin, covered with a poncho or cape and whistle in hand, and he toured various neighborhoods from seven at night doing surveillance work. This tradition came from Spain, and it was customary to announce from ten o'clock at night the time that the church bells rang along with the state of the city. Inscription in ink: "Vigilante oder polizeidiener zn mula".
It belongs to the album "1871 Praetoria" which contains 39 plates of which 25 are watercolors and the remaining 14 illuminated lithographs. These images are an example of the nineteenth-century production of pictorial costumbrismo in Peru, a repertoire of typical characters -in this case from the city of Lima-, composed without much context, and rather characterized by their work and clothing.
