Verginia murdered by her father

Filippo Abbiati1685

Milan, Italy

This painting describes in detail the passage from
Livy’s Ab Urbe Condita narrating the
murder of Verginia by her father. All the characters involved in the tragic
episode crowd the scene and the theatrical combination of characters and
feelings is accompanied by a studied effect of light. Today we still do not know the former location of the
canvas, with its characteristics of the 1680s, where the style of Genoa at that
time merged with Lombard artistic tradition.
