The sculptural group “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse”, created by Gustavo Basto, in 1969, was initially installed in a small garden at the intersection of Boavista and Marechal Gomes da Costa avenues. In 1993, the group was relocated to the Virtudes Promenade, after being replaced by José Rodrigues’ “Monument to the Businessman”, which stands there to date. “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” shares the garden with another work from the same author, entitled “Serpent”. Both works were part of a joint project, developed during the Colonial War, which questioned the image of stability and order conveyed by the Portuguese dictatorship regime.
