  • Title: Wooden skittles game set made by German WWI prisoners
  • Date: c 1914
  • Location: Liverpool
  • Type: Skittles
  • Significance: There is an image held by the National Archives of a display of German internee handicrafts that shows a set of skittles exactly the same as this, and may well be the same set. The material is highly significant for the history of Australia's first and arguably most important naval victory. Material relating to the EMDEN crew's time in the Liverpool prisoner of war camp south west of Sydney is rare and important and shows a side of the conflict that has had little public exposure and a human side of the story that offers important interpretive value.
