This World War II (1939-1945) Delft blue and white plate depicts a Dutch ship sailing the rough seas against a storm with dark skies and the “all seeing eye” or God watching over them. The inscription honors the 6th stanza of The Netherland’s national anthem, “Mijn schild en de betrouwen zijt gij, O God Mjin Heer” meaning “my shield and reliance are you, o God my Lord”. It was created shortly after hostilities in the Second World War (1939-1945) commenced and prays to God to keep the Netherlands safe. The plate is decorated on the back with two circular parallel blue lines and marked Delft and was sold in Philippona, a fine porcelain tableware and accessories shop in S’Gravenhage.
