Parts of a literate tradesman’s equipment in the Middle Ages were his personal seal, as well as writing utensils: Wax tablets, used for taking notes, stuck in wooden frames that were bound in a leather cover, like the leaves of a book. Styli of bronze or bone typically had a broad, flat end in the form of a spatula, which could be used to erase the notes again.
