One of the Four Beauties in ancient China, Yang Guifei was also known as Yang Yuhuan 杨玉环, the concubine of the Tang emperor Xuanzong (r. 712-756). It was said that her monopolization of the emperor’s love and attention led to his dereliction of state affairs and eventually a full-scale rebellion. Her stunning beauty, the epic romance, and her tragic death are legendary in Chinese historical lore.
