This yari, or a spearhead, bears an inscription, “Masakuni in Harima Province (modern Hyogo Prefecture)”. However, a record about this spear says “Masakuni in Soshu Province (modern Kanagawa Prefecture)”. Thus, there is a lack of evidence to determine which Masakuni is the creator of this sword.
According to a document from the Tachibana family, the first lord of the Yanagawa domain, Tachibana Muneshige, rendered distinguished service for the battle in Korea with two spears; one is “Kanesada” and the other is this spear “Masakuni”.
Thereafter, during daimyo processions performed by the Yanagawa domain, the attendant, who marched just behind the lord’s palanquin, always carried this spear.
