Promissory Note issued by the Zimmerman Bank. This form of currency was not issued by the federal government, nor any government, but by a private bank. It could be used in lieu of governmental currency at places which would accept it. In Canada, especially prior to Confederation, there was a large variety of currencies which would be accepted including US dollars, Nova Scotia dollars, Spanish silver, and army bills which were promissory notes distributed by the British government in lieu of pay during the War of 1812. There were many other bank notes which were distributed including those from the Bank of Montreal.
The Zimmerman Bank opened on May 19th 1855 at Bridge and Zimmerman (then called Clifton Avenue).
