Bo Ya was good at playing the guqin, but no one could really understand his melody. Finally, he met Zhong Ziqi, who could fully understand the songs he played and became his bosom friend. When Ziqi died, Bo Ya broke his guqin and vowed never to play again. The carpenter used this story as a metaphor to imply his hope for someone that can appreciate his talent.
