Every twenty years, the kami of Ise Jingu is transferred to a newly constructed divine palace in a ritual called the Shikinen Sengu; the greatest ritual of Ise Jingu to pray for the perpetual happiness of the kami, the nation, and the people. The buildings are reconstructed as well as the sacred apparel and furnishings, and divine treasures are remade to the exact same appearance as before to preserve the state of “Tokowaka (everlasting freshness)” in the “Dai-Kannamesai” ritual. This is the Shikinen Sengu.
