Luo Hsiu-mei is a female artist whose works revolve around cloth, needles and thread. Two years ago she sewed nearly 100 completely white yet differently shaped sleeping bags for her "The Marginal World" series. She used this as a vehicle to disassociate herself from social relations and effectively marginalize herself, hiding in a pupa like sleeping bag. It is within this pupa that Luo discovers a sense of security from being alone. The work on display here, "Dear Heart II" is made up of another collection of sleeping bags. Members of the audience are encouraged to wriggle themselves into two connected bags to experience first hand the close bond between mother and child. Luo Hsiu-mei's own experience of child raising makes her keen to bridge the distance between people, to discuss intimacy. In addition, the encouragement of audience participation in her work is an expression of the artist’s desire to share such intimacy with everyone.
