My first trip to Four Four South Village left me in disbelief. Never did I expect to see a lovely place as rustic and laidback as it is, nestled among the department stores in the bustling Xinyi District; less than one hundred steps away from Taipei 101. All I wanted to do was to take a stroll in the Village, relax my head on the grassy land and enjoy the blue sky above, putting the busy and hectic Taipei life behind me.
Bamboo fence is one of the major architectural materials in the ""juancun"" or military dependents' village in the olden times, marking the rise and the decline of a juancun. ""Take a Stroll"" is made of bamboos, a material reminiscent of the good old days in the juancun. In a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere such as this, the work exhibited makes no attempt to describe the showcase any profound artistic intent. On the contrary, it demonstrates various bamboo weaving techniques, sending people on their way down the memory lane. It is all the more fun and joyous when people are allowed to wander aimlessly.
