Despite his recognition in the international art scene, Jeong-Hwa Choi has not changed his creative belief that“ art should be an experience in every minute of our lives. ” Choi uses bright and colorful plastic pieces or inflatable objects to create large sculptures, and is inspired by flea markets and street vendors around the world as he travels. Ready-made and inexpensive materials often lead us to think of the consumer culture or globalization, but in the end, Choi is mainly concerned about pure visual aesthetics. The lotus has long been an important symbol in Asian culture. Choi ’s giant lotus, made of synthetic materials, blossoms in the heart of Taipei City. The flower sculpture is a mechanism that opens and closes, causing it to appear all the more lifelike. This juxtaposition of nature ’s creation and manmade machinery is somewhat abrupt, but it manifests as a delightful and surprising piece of artwork.
