European printed cotton (also called Dutch printed cotton) produced as an imitation of Indian printed cotton was much valued like its precursor during the Edo period. The netsuke is a western dog carved from ivory, while the string fastener is a glass bead. The netsuke functions to keep the bead on the string, and is tucked into the sash to hang the pouch from the waist.
