Magda Sayeg, founder of Knitta, has taken knitting out of the home and onto the streets. When the artist began in 2005, it was a simple response to the harsh, dehumanizing qualities of the urban environment in which she lived.
In juxtaposing handmade, woven materials with harsh, concrete and steel, she adds a human quality that otherwise rarely exists in the urban landscape and inspires an entirely new approach to knitting. Her work takes knitting beyond craft and challenges traditional assumptions about graffiti.
This site-specific installation, located in the historic Tobacco Factory, celebrates many of the themes of Magda’s work and seeks to continue a dialog about the state of the urban environments which we live
