For Jan Vormann, broken corners and missing red tiles make for ideal places for creativity. He uses plastic construction bricks of all colors and sizes to fill in the missing pieces on various structures. The makeover breathes new life into what used to be inconspicuous spots, transforming a gray city into a playground of colorful surprises.
The project began in an ancient Italian city. It is infectious in inspiring creativity and the desire to create. Vormann welcomes participants from all over the world to join the project. To date, over forty cities have seen spontaneous Dispatchwork initiated by the locals.
Vormann visited Taipei in June 2012. Take a look at the moment when city corners meet creativity and art and you’ll notice a surprising likeness in Vormann’s vision and that of Fubon Art Foundation. For years, the Foundation has been promoting the concept of a “museum without walls,” aimed at engaging art in a dialogue with everyday life. The Foundation’s devotion in changing the city lanscape has won it the 2011 Taipei Culture Award. To extend the honor, the Foundation invited Vormann and his Dispatchwork to Taipei. The project also drew in students of Chengchi University, along with some shops in Taipei’s East District and many locals. Their enthusiastic participation made Vormann’s visit to Taipei heartfelt and memorable.
Feel free to initiate your own Dispatchwork with colorful plastic construction bricks anytime, anywhere. Let’s create ripples of color in different corners of the city!
