Step 1: Basic design is drawn over the wood and a knife is used to begin carving.
Step 2: A knife is used to carve along the outer edge of the marked line.
Step 3: Raw lacquer is mixed with camphor oil and spread over the wood to allow full absorption.
Step 4: Raw lacquer is applied and coal dust is sprinkled over the surface using a brush.
Step 5: Scratches on the wood is fixed using sabi (a compound of polishing powder and raw lacquer) and the surface sanded down once it is dry.
Step 6: Black lacquer is applied over the surface.
Step 7: Vermillion lacquer is applied over the black lacquer and Zizania latifolia (Manchurian wild rice) powder is sprinkled over the lacquer as it is about to dry.
Step 8: The surface is polished using a scrubbing brush made of straw.
Step 9: Suriurushi (applying lacquer only over the motif) is repeated several times until final finish.
