The construction of Nammun Gate as part of Naeseong Fortress in Gaeseong was begun in 1391 and completed in 1394 (the 3rd year of the reign of King Taejo of Joseon). The gate underwent large-scale repair and restoration work in 1900 (the 4th year of the reign of Emperor Gwangmu [previously King Gojong] of the Korean Empire). The gate was destroyed during the Korean War in 1950, and restored in 1954. (A photo of the gate taken during the Japanese occupation)
