About 2,000 independence demonstrators attacked, damaged, and set fire to the township offices, police substations, postal agencies, and Japanese stores in Yangseong-myeon and Wongok-myeon in Anseong-gun County on April 1 to 2, 1999. Japanese officials and people who felt threatened by the demonstrators escaped to Anseong-eup and the nearby mountains. The demonstration in Anseong was one of three major demonstrations during the March 1st Movement that broke out throughout the country. During the demonstrations held on April 2 and 3 in Suwon, demonstrators attacked and set fire to the township offices in Jangan and Ujeong, and a police substation in Hwasu-ri, and retaliated against Japan by killing a Japanese policeman who fired on the demonstrators.
