The Japanese military police assembled the residents of Jeam-ri in the local church, locked its doors, and set fire to and opened fire on it as a reprisal for the independence demonstration held in Jeam-ri, Hyangnam-myeon, Suwon-si (present-day of Hyangnam-eup, Hwaseong-si), on April 15, 1919.
