Yakutsk is a major port on the Lena River. It is served by the Yakutsk Airport as well as the smaller Magan Airport. The region is a major source of diamonds. With an average temperature of −8.8 °C, Yakutsk is the second coldest major city in the world after Norilsk, although Yakutsk experiences even colder temperatures in the winter.
