Fashioning Moonj Grass into Ropes

Known for its natural quality, a charpai is created by combining weaving and carpentry skills of a craftsman. A rectangular structure supported by four legs is filled with designer weave patterns of natural rope. Moonj is a locally grown grass which serves as the raw material for the traditional charpai. Craftsmen cut and soak moonj sticks for 2-3 days to extract natural fiber. They are then twisted by hand to form a rope and then dried in the sun before being used for weaving a charpai. In today’s time, due to changing demands, the charpai's in Punhana are also woven in vibrant and colourful resham ropes or baan.

Shaping the Frame Using Wood

Master craftsmen, Shamsher Khan (45) and Mahmood Khan (41) have been creating charpais for the last 22 years. Having learnt the skill from their parents, Shamsher, is a weaving expert while Mahmood is an expert carpenter. The craftsmen use locally grown hard wood of Sal tree for creating the rectangular frame of the charpai and softer wood obtained from Babool or Shesham trees for the paya or the leg. This soft wood is easy to carve in intricate designs using basic tools like a hammer and a chisel, known as hathora and cheni, respectively.
