Marketplace in Punhana
Punhana serves as the main marketplace for charpais. Master craftsmen Shamsher Khan and Mahmood Khan travel 10 km from their native village (Nai) every day to open their shop/workshop at 9:00 am. The finished charpais are laid outside the shop to attract customers and unfinished charpais are assigned for weaving or carpentry work to craftsman in the workshop. The workshop is also a training ground for young boys who are eager to learn the skill from master craftsmen.

The unfinished charpais are kept out of the workshop for finishing.
Carpentry and weaving of a new charpai takes place inside the workshop in Punhana.

Samna Khan, a helper, can be seen stacking up the unfinished charpais outside the workshop in Punhana market for further weaving and finishing.
On average, a weaver can make 2-3 charpais in a day.

The charpai shop is surrounded by carpentry shops in the Punhana marketplace.
For better promotion and marketing of the charpais, the craftsmen display the charpais in these shops too.

Master craftsmen, Shamsher Khan (45) and Mahmood Khan (41) sit against their creation in Punhana workshop.
They have been making the charpais for the last 22 years and from the last 14 years have taken up creating new designs using colourful resham baan or rope.

Punhana charpais are made in different sizes for different purpose.
Colourful Peedas (21 x 21 inch) are small sitting stool which are used by the ladies to do household work.

Charpais in Urban Markets
The unique feature of the Punhana charpai is that it can be customised.
As they are handmade,customers can choose the colours, design and the
size of the charpai to suit their needs.These vibrant charpai's can been
seen in the the two major craft fairs held in Delhi and Haryana; Dastkari
Haat Samiti’s craft bazaar at Dillii Haat , New Delhi and Surajkund
mela in Haryana.
