A textile factory transformed

For the 2019 Global Series, ACC invited Portuguese artist Vhils to create a second wall in Parque La Ruina. The park used to be a textile factory called Textiles de Sonora S.A, which was founded in 1945. The purpose of this wall is to showcase the state of Sonora, its modern outlook and to attract people to the area.

After 25 years of operations, the textile factory closed due to too much competition. It was later used as a warehouse until it was eventually abandoned.

Vhils @ Parque La Ruina

The artist was inspired by the faces of women and men who worked in the factory decades ago. He seeks to shed light on the past through these walls that were pristine in the past and are now beginning to decay. He immersed himself in the heart of the building, rescuing the essence of the people who built and worked inside it.  He made his way into the heart of the building and captured the essence of the people who built and worked inside it. The artist perfectly captured the fragility of the human condition and the urban spaces they inhabit.

This mural also raises awareness on the fast pace of life, which is mostly lived through a screen. As a result, Vhils asks the following question: “What are we giving up in the name of this short-term convenience and what is this speed demanding from us in return?”
