The Teton Range towers over Grand Teton National Park. The Snake River flows through the Jackson Hole valley along the base of the mountains. Yellowstone National Park lies to the north and the town of Jackson lies to the south. One of the iconic treasures of the park is the David T. Vernon Collection of American Indian ethnographic objects.

Laurance S. Rockefeller purchased the collection in 1972 from Vernon and transferred ownership to the park four years later. The Colter Bay Indian Arts Museum housed a portion of the collection for more than 40 years. Most of the collection is undergoing conservation work at the Western Archaeological Conservation Center (WACC) including examination, photography, construction of custom mounts, stabilization and repair. A few objects have returned to the Colter Bay and Craig Thomas visitor centers. In the future, a new museum will house a rotating collection of these incredible artifacts.
