Museo Casa del Mendrugo

Heroica Puebla de Zaragoza, Mexico

Casa del Mendrugo Foundation is a cultural institution, located in an imposing structure of the Viceroyalty Era, in the Historic Center of the city of Puebla, Mexico. The title given to this house is linked to its origins. According to tradition, it was built by the order of the Jesuits with mendrugos, i.e., “crumbs” they collected from local supporters of the order. This concept is a poetic way of referring to charity, since mendrugo refers to something that is left over and discarded.

In 2008, the restoration process of this building began. Today, it is an iconic cultural space that houses a restaurant, a cafeteria, a giftshop and a museum. In the latter, important pre-Hispanic and colonial objects are exhibited, as well as other outstanding and unique collection of ancient zapotec royal funeral rites that includes engraved skulls and bones and shells, among others; these are related to the popular "Day of the Dead".
