Torifune Butoh Sha was established in April 1991 by butoh dancer Kayo Mikami and writer, Yukio Mikami. The company presented its first performance, "Dedicated Flower", in 1992. In 1994, they launched the "Shonan Butoh School," a butoh group that welcomed the general public from ages 10 to 80. Since then they have been developing two strands of performance works: Kayo Mikami’s solos and small group works, as well as large group pieces involving the Shonan Butoh School members (30-40 of them) and invited professional dancers. They also lead workshops based on Noguchi gymnastics. In November 2001, they expanded the "Shonan Butoh School" to Kyoto, with a focus on working with university students. So far, they have performed in 29 cities in 13 countries to high acclaim. They hold workshops intermittently at their Oiso Open-air Studio.
