Together, they are committed to a choreography by a voice giving them orders. The user finds himself in a minimal virtual world, abstract but rather faithful to the spatial physical reality around him. Thus, the platforms and chairs are appearing in both virtual and physical realms and are positioned accordingly. Users head rotations are also transcribed in the virtual world in real time. Together with the others two participants, he is committed to a choreography. Without being made aware of, the user becomes an actor of the artwork, giving it life and assuming the potential responsibility for its success or interpretation.

CNY/USD, CNY/EUR, CNY/GBP (2019) by Fei LiArte Laguna Prize - Art Exhibition

Fei Li - CNY/USD, CNY/EUR, CNY/GBP

How is this world running? This work explores culture exchange under the economic system. CNY/GBP, CNY/USD, CNY/EUR translates the exchange rates of currencies into a live sound work. Each period of exchange reflects a specific cultural period like an echo. To the artist, an exchange rate is like a split line between cultures, two sides always changing with the economic curve. The baseline of the exchanging rate becomes equivalent to an invisible value criteria. Through basic artificial intelligence and big data, this sound installation makes visible the audible aspects of virtual data, and transmits this curve of ‘value’ to sound. It forms a heart-rate monitor of the world, connecting with each individual.
