Palermo Procession (2018) by Marinella SenatoreTHAT'S CONTEMPORARY
"Marinella Senatore lives and works in Rome and Paris. She was trained in music, fine arts and cinema. Her artistic practice is intended to trigger dialogues between history, culture and social structures through involvement, sharing and the occupation of public spaces. Her work primarily consists of performances in selected places, which are turned into platforms where participants can experience the energy of community.
Senatore’s large use of music and dance underlines the sense of emancipation inherent in such disciplines and their capacity to combine individual and collective limelight.
Senatore conceives art as a form of resistance and a social practice to build a sense of citizenship. Through her works, she creates a space of critical thinking. Besides performances, Senatore uses video, drawing and painting, installation, photography, sound and sculpture to provide content on rights and citizenship.
The School of Narrative Dance, Shenzhen. by Marinella SenatoreTHAT'S CONTEMPORARY
In 2013 she founded "The School of Narrative Dance", a nomadic free school based on a system of horizontal learning and emancipation. Other activities are part of the cycle “Protest Dance”. Senatore’s work typically involves large numbers of people. Doing activities side by side is indeed for Senatore a way to assert the value of sharing and being together giving one’s best: walking, dancing, singing, making contact with the ground and touching others is in itself a strong assertion.
For example, during Manifesta 12, which took place in Palermo in summer 2018, Senatore created a collective performative project throughout the whole city, called “Palermo Procession”: streets and squares were used as theatres and Palermo was pervaded by vibrating energy coming from a crowd of children, dancers, all kinds of singers, kids doing parkour, actors reading texts by Pier Paolo Pasolini and partisans, who ended the event".
