The statue of the Black Madonna
The Black Madonna, carved in Pinus Cembra (Swiss pinewood) in the 13th century, is the heart of the shrine, which for centuries has welcomed pilgrims from all over the world. In 1599, as a gesture of gratitude made by the people from Biella who survived the plague, the Ancient Basilica was built. On August 30, 1620 the first coronation of the statue took place and thousands of pilgrims reached Oropa to attend the event. The gesture of the coronation has been renewed every century: in 1720, in 1820, just out of the hard Napoleonic age, until 1920, when, after the Great War, in one of the most difficult moments in Italian history, over 150 thousand people took part to the event. In 2020, on Sunday 30 August will take place the 5th centenary Coronation of the Madonna
