There are different ways to experience history outside the pages of a book. You can visit a place or a monument to get a sense of the scene where history has unfolded, you can also experience recreated history, as in period theatre or at exhibits of a museum. Here, take a look at history that is reproduced in a miniature form, in 3D.

In my hobby room, set in Gurgaon, lays a model of the Kalka Shimla Railway (KSR) as it existed on 14th September, 1971. It may be a scale model, but I have tried to make it as true-to- prototype as I could.

As of September 2016, I have built five stations: Dharampur, Barog, Solan, Solan Brewery and Taradevi. All that remains in my bucket list are Kalka, Summerhill and Shimla.

The KSR has long been a lifetime Railway project. I had dreamt of building it since the mid-1980s. In 2009, I finally acquired the resources to start planning the build. The Railway has been six years in actual building.

I used a plastic base, which is a light weight blue foam. Onto the foam, I attached 3mm cork sheet using white wood glue, a.k.a. Fevicol. To lay down any track at all, we need to decide the ‘scale’ in which the railway is to be built. The track is stuck down with white glue, after which the sleepers and rail sides are painted, using Acrylic paints for realism.

I then used river sand to represent ballast that used to hold down track on the prototype. With hundreds of photographs of the railway stations, I began to plan each station.

Dharampur Railway Station

The 'mini' journey begins at an unnamed train staging yard somewhere in the plains, from which a single line climbs up a succession of punishing loops till it arrives at the lovely hillside station of Dharampur.

From Dharampur, the climb continues. The line snakes up the pine forests and through KSR’s (Kalka Shimla Railway) longest tunnel to Barog station.

Solan

Solan lost its goods siding in about 1989, so don’t be surprised if the model doesn’t look like the station if you visit it today. Nevertheless, the station building is almost as pretty as the original.

Solan Brewery

Past Solan, the line continues its climb till it reaches Solan Brewery. Although Solan Distilleries paid for the construction and maintenance of the brewery, it still bears the indelible mark of a KSR design.

Solan Brewery featured a passing loop. A third goods loop was permitted for direct loading of Old Monk Rum, Solan No. 1 and Golden Eagle Beer from the brewery store. When trucks became more efficient as a means of transportation, the station fell into disuse and the Railways shut it down some years back.

The 'mini' journey now takes us to the northern most station on the route yet built: Taradevi. This beautiful S-shaped station hangs on a narrow ledge above a stiff slope, within the sight of Shimla.
