What is The Cherry Orchard?
It comprises over 300 Prunus Tai Haku, the "Great White Japanese Cherry". They are planted formally, but create one of the largest cherry orchards of this variety in the world. Grown purely for their white flowers, these are the largest white cherry blossoms that you can see.

The dedication ceremony
Every year there is a dedication ceremony where sponsors of the trees are invited. The Duchess of Northumberland puts on a reception with guest speakers - after which there is a lantern parade through the garden lanterns up to the orchard where the trees are blessed.

Why is there one pink blossom?
There is one tree dedicated to Ian August, who was The Duchess's right hand man. He has his own tree which is pink - the idea being that when asked why this is the only pink one, they can see a memorial plaque to Ian which explains all about his work at The Garden.
