Formerly Known As...

Mission Marquee Plaza, formerly known as Mission Drive-In Theatre, opened in 2014 in its current format. The Marquee is located on San Antonio's Southside, near Mission San Jose. It's considered an iconic gem where families gathered to watch movies when it was a drive-in theater.

Looking Back

The Mission Drive-In Theater opened on March 27, 1948, with a 77-minute long Western – Pirates of Monterey.

Before the Marquee

Long before it was a drive-in theater, the area was originally inhabited by the native Coahuiltecan tribe. This community comprises one of the oldest parts of San Antonio, with a long history dating to prehistoric times.

Living Heritage

In 1720, Franciscan priests founded nearby Mission San Jose along the San Antonio River, bringing their teachings and traditions.

Last to Go Dark

In 2000, after a run of more than half a century, Mission Drive-In theater was the last to go dark in San Antonio. It was briefly reopened on May 25, 2001 and continued service through 2003. In 2007, the Mission Drive-In property was acquired by the City of San Antonio.

Mural Restoration

In January 2013 the Mission Drive-In Marquee Mural Re-Creation Project was completed by the City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture. The mural re-creation work included researching the original mural and adhering to historic preservation standards for the recreation.

New Purpose

On June 14, 2014, Mission Marquee Plaza officially opened its doors for the next generation of families to enjoy. The facility is currently managed as an arts & culture facility by the City of San Antonio World Heritage Office.

Quality of Life

The Mission Branch Library and YMCA center are also located on the property. Soon a World Heritage Center and aquatics facility will be added, creating a community campus featuring fitness classes, health and wellness programs, and access to the Mission Reach river trails.

Active Mission

Healthy living is promoted through Farmer's Markets, FREE community movement and wellness activities such as Yoga and Zumba classes where all ages, fitness levels, and abilities are welcome.

In addition to the movie screenings, the farmers and artisans markets take place every 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month.
