This collecting project of visual archives was based on the photographs from the Jose Pessoa collection. This researcher is studying the advent of commercial photography in Lamego, having already identified the six main commercial photography houses of the 19th century.
The ability to portray people by photographic processes (from 1841 onwards) had a worldwide impact, being commercialised on all continents and in all population centres. The importance of these processes, capable of surviving to the present day, is today fundamental not only to the historical study of social and economic evolution, but also to the mentalities, clothing and anthropology, both biological and cultural.

Have been identified, so far, the houses of the photographers Duarte Santos, I. S. Pereira, M. Olivenza and three members of the Florido Family.
The theme of the images is centred on individual and group portraits, also fixing key moments in the lives of those portrayed. Through the images is possible to obtain some important information for the investigation of these photographic houses.
