Founded in 2009, Asia Art Archive in America (AAAinA) is an independently established and operated U.S. 501(c)3 and the U.S. hub of Asia Art Archive (AAA) in Hong Kong.

Responding to a growing public interest in recent art from Asia and the Asian diaspora, AAAinA is one of few organizations providing well-researched and up to date information about recent art history and current art practice of these regions and communities.

Through regular programming, a publicly accessible reading room, and a resource rich website, AAAinA highlights under-documented narratives and related art practices in order to enrich and give nuance to Asian, American and global art history, to expand understanding of contemporary art practice, and to create new knowledge and art.

Our collection includes, exhibition catalogs, artist monographs, periodicals, reference books, videos, and artist books/zines. We are also an online access point to AAA’s extensive research collections.

With over 13 years of programming experience, AAAinA has served an audience of more than 20,000 onsite visitors and has organized over 400 programs with artists, curators, and scholars. This includes workshops, panel discussions, screenings, and performances. For example:
We presented a performance lecture, Methods Of Memory–Time Travels in the Archives by Sim Chi Yin, centering on the artist’s excavation of hidden histories of the anti-colonial war in the former British colony of Malaya, which was followed by a conversation with Tao Leigh Goffe.

We hosted our first zine residency in 2022 that supported four artists in the creation of a new zine that responded to AAA-A’s digital and physical archive and collection.

Annually, we present an Independent Publishers Panel. For our 5th panel, Januar Rianto of Further Reading Press and Sebastián Arancibia and Sebastián Barrante of Naranja Publicaciones each shared the history and role of their presses within Southeast Asia and Chile, respectively.
We hosted a panel discussion that brought together the collective enterprises mh PROJECT nyc, Mutual Aid Projects, & Northeast by Southeast. Following short introductions on the mission of their respective projects, Francis Estrada (Northeast by Southeast) and Mayumi Hayashi (mh PROJECT nyc) joined moderator Eugenie Tsai for a conversation on the shifting nature of friendship, community, and collectivity.

We hosted a performance, screening, and talk by artist-scholars Việt Lê, kate-hers RHEE, and Hồng-Ân Trương who examined archives, intimacies, and empires through cross-disciplinary practices, which included experimental film, poetry, performance, and installation.
