Meet Carl Gabriel
My name is Carl Gabriel. I’m a Carnival technician, working in traditional wire bending technique, and papier mache.
Most of the colour and design work you see on the wire, was done by my late wife Lyn, it’s a year since she passed, and I’d really like to dedicate this to her.

I’ve been working with Notting Hill Carnival for the past 47 years. And I’ve been contributing every single year since then. In all the different disciplines, like the steel pan, the mas, and I've documented the calypsonians, and stuff like that.

What does Notting Hill Carnival mean to you?
Notting Hill Carnival means it’s an opportunity to really present traditional high quality art and for the whole of London. Whoever’s coming to the Carnival, they’re seeing something special. It’s a shame it’s not going to happen this year, but I see it as an opportunity to upscale. For the young ones to upscale. I’m sure next year it will be even better.
What does Notting Hill Carnival mean to you?
People would see a piece, and want to hire it for a sort of corporate event or whatever, you never know where the next project’s gonna come. This is a big project. This is for Brent the borough of culture. I’m one of ten artists that they chose to do a special piece.
You are all set!
Your first Culture Weekly will arrive this week.
