Meet the Biological Resources Experts

This exhibition is designed to provide job information for experts in biological resource utilization field working at national institutions for young people. The seven experts in bio-resource utilization field were included in the front, and various reasons such as the reason for choosing the major and aspirations as researchers of the national institute were formed. We borrowed the type of hand letter written by manga or researchers to familiarize them with topics that seem to be somewhat difficult for young people, such as genome, DNA barcode, bio-resource component and efficacy analysis related to the field of bio-resource utilization.

In the 21st century, the world is competing to secure intense biomass resources to make living things possible. As the 'ABS Nagoya Protocol' became effective in 2014, the biological resources of other countries, such as those used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and food industries, became difficult to use at will. Therefore, research on the exploration and utilization of biological resources in our country is urgent. The Ministry of Environment establishes National Institute of Biological Resources through securing, collecting and managing biological resources in our country. In addition, we have built a foundation to support the bio-technology and are working on the research on usability of the biology. Following the exhibition, which introduced seven experts in the field of biodiversity in the National Institute of Biological Resources in 2014, the 12th special exhibit selected seven experts in bio-resource utilization field exploring usefulness for the industrialization of biological resources I am introducing. It is said to collect the biologic information one by one as the empty puzzle is completed and complete the picture as a whole ... Let's meet Dr. Kim Sun-ok, a genome biology expert, and listen to the secret in the code. 1. Doctor, what is the genome? A genome is any genetic information that a creature has. Genetic information (DNA) consists of four bases (A, G, C, and T). Eventually, the organism has a unique gene base sequence, which can be summarized as the genetic information of the organism, the genome. 2. Why do you study the organism's genome? The genome can be seen as a kind of "encrypted design" that contains the secrets of life. Genomic studies can be used to complete and decipher the genetic blueprint of a living organism to clarify the life phenomena and evolution of living things. It can also be used to restore endangered species that have disappeared or utilize organisms of useful constituents. So, the National Biological Resource Center is conducting a genome study of wildlife. 3. I wonder about your childhood. I was born in the farmhouse of Ulleungdo as the 8th sister. Even in Ulleungdo, it was close to the mountains. In the spring, I went to the mountains with my friends and ate them with herbs after picking up the 'mosque'. It is the endemic species (Campanula takesimana) which blooms only on Ulleungdo Island when it recognizes that it is the lily of the valley that the pretty flower such as lanterns is seen. When I was out of my childhood, all the medicinal herbs, herbs, flowers, and everything around me were friends and friends. 4. How did you become a biomass expert? From Ulleungdo to junior high school, I was always interested in living things near mountains and sea. Then I went to college and majored in biology, studied the diseases of plants caused by microorganisms and got my Ph.D. I was interested in how microorganisms such as fungi cause diseases in plants. Research has shown that plants defend themselves against external invasions in a number of ways and that mold penetrates into plants for survival and reproduction, all of which are controlled by the genes of plants and fungi. It was interesting to study the action of these genes. 5. Please let me know your plan I am studying genomes for endangered species that need to be conserved, creatures used as useful resources, and fungi that help plants. In Korea, the genome research of wildlife has begun in earnest. But that's a lot of things I can do. I want to contribute genetic information of more native species to find unlimited treasures to be used in medicine and industry.

Just as humans have DNA, all animals and plants have DNA. DNA, which is the genetic information of an organism, can distinguish species accurately. A DNA barcode is a fingerprint of a standardized DNA molecule marker that allows you to see what genes all organisms have on Earth. It can be called a 'genetic identification' (ID) that can quickly and accurately identify each species. DNA can be extracted from a living organism, such as animal hair or flesh, even if the organism is deformed. Since 2003, world scientists have started the 'DNA Bio-Barcode Project', which creates DNA barcodes of species. About 200 research institutes from 50 countries are participating. The National Biological Resource Center has also obtained DNA barcode information about 6,000 native species. By using DNA bar codes that can not be manipulated, it is possible to prevent illegal distribution of endangered species as well as species discrimination of similar herbs.

It identifies the constituents and efficacy of biological resources secured by legitimate procedures in Cambodia and Laos as well as wildlife. In order to increase the research result, many researches have been made by selecting and analyzing the analysis subject based on the traditional knowledge that has been passed down from the past. Now, let's take a look at the composition analysis room for analyzing biological components and the efficacy analysis room for discovering the efficacy of natural products.

Scientific analysis of the organisms that have been used since ancient times. It is time-consuming to analyze what constitutes a useful ingredient in a living thing. Oligosaccharides, which were known only as sugar substitutes, still have a hidden value. Let's hear about the possibility of Dr. Lee as a support from the National Biological Resource Center. Oligosaccharides are functional sugars made from enzymatic synthesis and are intended to improve the health deficiencies of existing sweeteners. Oligosaccharides have been scientifically proven to be good for health. The domestic oligosaccharide market has also grown more than three times over the past five years. Oligosaccharides are obtained by fermenting starch and the like with microorganisms. Most of the raw materials depend on imported potatoes and corn. Challenge to mass proliferation of microorganisms "We are studying to make microorganisms grow well and healthy" Microorganisms that can not be seen anywhere but everywhere. About 80% of the microorganisms around us can not be artificially grown! However, there is a person who challenges this impossible. Meet your father, Dr. Huh Moon-seok, who grows microorganisms and listen to the mass culture of microorganisms. Microorganisms themselves are resources, but the products from fermentation and metabolism are also resources. Hyundai has analyzed the genes of microorganisms so that we can see how certain microorganisms can grow in certain situations and environments. Based on this information, the microbes grow well and are actively active if they match the appropriate conditions and environment in which certain useful microbes grow well. Let me introduce some of the things I have studied that are memorable. The first is to find enzymes of native microorganisms that can biologically make emulsifiers of cosmetics to make chemically. Second, we found bacteria that reduce the toxicity of arsenic in soils with heavy metal contamination. This bacterium has been identified as a new species that has been shown to reduce pollution about twice as much as the same functioning microorganisms reported worldwide. In order to utilize these microorganisms, we need core technologies that can grow stable microorganisms. I plan to continue studying these core technologies. To friends who dream of biological resources experts Good morning. I am Lee Seung-gi, who is studying fish stem cells at the National Biological Resources Resource Analysis Division. From his childhood, he loved tropical fish like angelfish, neon tetra, and Sumatra. When I was in elementary school, I read a book called "The Book of Ornaments" and read it again. In the aquarium in the neighborhood, it was enough to match all the names of tropical fish. But tropical fish is a small creature, so if you care about it, you will soon get sick and die. So I went to a marine fisheries university where I could accumulate scientific knowledge such as fish breeding, genetics, and embryology. I am now studying using stem cells to restore endangered fish. As much as the love of fish I had when I was a kid, the fish that are currently threatened with extinction need a lot of attention from people. I am studying to restore the endangered fish by implanting it into another species by safely storing the stem cells in the germ of the fish called 'reproductive stem cells' in a -196 ℃ cryogenic freezer. However, each fish species has different experimental conditions and related technologies, so there is a lot to study in the future. In addition, fish stem cell research is also a fast-growing field. At present, it is possible to make a small puffer fish called 'swordfish' and 'Hwangbok' fish, which fish people enjoy, and research on mackerel that produces tuna is underway. I think that the development of stem cell culture technology will allow a fish to be born in one stem cell in a short time.
