Equilibrando la curva

In the “Equilibrando la curva” exhibition, Wilfredo Prieto (Sancti Spíritus, Cuba, 1978) examines the infinite potential of art and how its ultimate aim is to make us look at the world through different eyes. Coming up against objects and materials of very different types and sizes, we find ourselves plunged into a world that brings into question our normal perceptions and the instinctive associations we make between objects and the functions and meanings we normally attribute to them.

Wilfredo
Prieto’s disorienting installations, which tackle themes such as politics,
economics and the environment, are of huge visual impact. He takes much of his
inspiration from Cuban society, with which he maintains a critical but intense
relationship, but his work actually opens up to all of our global society and
to the goods, symbols and values it produces.

Prieto’s work starts out from everyday objects and materials, with no hierarchical distinction between industrial products, humble materials, precious objects or consumer goods. Prieto chooses his materials and objects on the basis of their economic, social and cultural significance and modifies their functions and characteristics, creating surprising short-circuits of meaning that we cannot help but reflect on.
