Late Night House

Club culture has made its mark at the Sydney Opera House.

Innovative DJs and artists pushing contemporary music into new forms - techno, house, electronic, dance, trance and more - have in recent years taken the same Opera House stages as symphony orchestras and stadium legends.

The Concert Hall has been transformed by artists including Kraftwerk, which distributed 3D glasses to everyone attending sellout shows hailed by The Guardian as “an immersive onslaught of light and sound that comes as close to synaesthesia as legally possible”.

Four Tet played “a bit of jungle, tribal electronic music, laced with elements of jazz and often an underlying but noticeable techno beat… [and] the Sydney Opera House was the perfect venue for his music to shine, and the spotlight, lasers and stage lights shining on him worked flawlessly,” according to The Music, who called the concert “dance music education”. Caribou too created a mesmerising festival of beats and light previously unseen and unheard in this performance space.

Elsewhere around the House, during the Vivid LIVE festival, studio parties reflect an ever evolving dance culture.

In this video, Steven Ellison, aka Flying Lotus, describes preparing for his performance on the Sydney Opera House's Concert Hall stage in May 2014.
