The Earthly and Divine Decorations of Palazzo Asmundo

In 1764 the President of Justice Giuseppe Asmundo, who became the owner of the Palace, had the halls on the main floor frescoed by the well-known artist Gioacchino Martorana.

Martorana was in great demand by the client of the time and is known for having frescoed Comitini Palace, D’Orleans Palace and Royal Palace. Inside Asmundo Palace he created a hymn to justice.

The paintings are present in 9 rooms. The most interesting are in the Concert Hall, in the Cathedral Hall, in the Allegory Room and in the Pink Room.

In this painting the virtues related to justice: Fortress, Temperance, Prudence, Truth and Calm. The representation of the unmasking of deception acquires a clear Enlightenment meaning.

This painting, which highlights the value of a detail, highlights the cosmic balance between the planets Mercury, Earth with its satellite, Mars and Venus.

The painter Gioacchino Martorana re-proposes the schemes and chromatic solutions of an iconography widely adopted in the different buildings in which he worked during the years of his activity.

The French Gastone Vuiller who stayed briefly in the palace in his book "Sicily", impressions of the present and the past published in 1897, was enraptured by the frescoes and the Palace.

The colors of the frescoes are sometimes illuminated directly by the external light. When the windows are open the pictures seem to be more bright.

The description that Gastone Vuiller made in 1897 of the Palazzo is still the most genuine today. Palazzo Asmundo is still a small jewel of Sicily.
