Birth

Zen Master Dogen was born in 1200.

Buddhist priesthood

Zen Master Dogen lost his mother at the age of eight and entered Buddhism when he learned of the world's impermanence.

Zen Master Dogen went to Song in 1223.  

Encounter with Zen Master Rujing

The first meeting with Zen Master Rujing in 1225.

Returning to Japan: A gift from Rujing

In 1227, Zen Master Dogen decides to return to Japan.

Daibutsu-ji Temple was built

In 1243, he entered the land of Echizen, and in 1244, he built Daibutsu-ji Temple.

Kosho-ji Temple was built

Koushou-ji Temple was built in 1233.Zen Master Dogen spent 11 years at Kosho-ji Temple.

Renamed Daibutsu-ji Temple to Eihei-ji Temple

In June 1246, Daibutsu-ji was changed to Eihei-ji.

Pass away

Zen Master Dogen moved to Kyoto in 1252 to recuperate from illness. However, he did not get better and died the following year at the age of 53.
