Castel Capuano Restoration project

At the back of the room is the Saloncino dei Busti, frescoed by Cacciapuoti with mythological figures,

while on the sides there are thirteen bronze and marble busts of distinguished jurists of the time.

Inside the Castle there is the Cappella della Sommaria, where the judges stopped and listened to the mass before meeting and deciding on the sentences.

This chapel was born in the first half of the 1500s, and was called Sommaria because it is adjacent to the audience hall of the Sommaria.

Before Don Pedro de Toledo transformed it into a chapel, it was used as a Court of Auditors and Tax

and was called the Royal Chamber of the Summary, since in the sixteenth century the "sommarii" were the court accountants.

The chapel is frescoed by Pedro de Rubliales, a painter chosen personally by Don Pedro de Toledo.

The square-shaped structure features frescoes with religious subjects on the walls.

The Library, inaugurated in 1896, houses about 80,000 volumes,

including very rare works that make up the so-called Ancient Fund.

The room that currently houses the Library was the seat of the Grand Council during the Angevin reign,

then the courtroom of the Grand Criminal Court in the Bourbon period.

The patriots who participated in the 1848 revolution against Ferdinand II were also tried here.

On the back of the Castle, the Fontana del Formiello was built in 1490,

formerly used as a drinking trough for horses and rebuilt in 1583 with the addition of the coats of arms of Viceroy Pedro d'Aragona.

The fountain was dismantled in the late nineteenth century and placed in the municipal deposits. In 1930 it was rebuilt on the eastern side, and later it was isolated with a gate.
