Collecting the city's photographic memory has been one of the municipality's constant concerns. Throughout the 20th century, it commissioned various photographers to record its built heritage, its neighbourhoods and inhabitants, and the changes that had taken place in the city of Lisbon

“Lisbon in the 1990s” was a project carried out by the Lisbon Municipal Archive in 1999, with the aim of reviving the “spirit of this commission”. Seven photographers were invited to take part; they were given the freedom to choose their themes, geography and approach, with a simple goal – to produce archive images of the city of Lisbon and its metropolitan area

The project ‘Lisbon in the 1990s – Archive Images’ achieved one of the main aims of the Lisbon Municipal Archive: to collect, preserve and disseminate the photographic record of the city for the public of that time and for future generations, which now includes all of us.
The series of 319 images is part of the Archive's collection, with these photographs being accessible online and continuing to be presented in different publications and exhibitions, contributing to the construction of the identity and memory of the city of Lisbon.
