The "Renaissance"; of the Talavera pottery

With the twentieth century, the century of "avant-garde," the world turned its gaze back to the past. At this time, Edwin Barber began studies on the pottery tradition of maiolica in New Spain in 1911.

Following Barber's research, interest in the industry that represented Puebla in colonial times rose in Mexico.

After this came the work of Enrique Cervantes, fundamental to the knowledge and appreciation of the Puebla Talavera pottery.

The guild of white pottery was established in the 16th century and abolished in the 19th century. The inventive vocation lasts in those who have never ceased to call themselves, with pride "potters".

With the revaluation of the Puebla Talavera pottery in the 20th century the industry gained a rebound in the local and national economy. The neo-colonial style during the 1950s returned to the use of tiles in the city's architecture.

The tourism boom in Mexico also helped keep the Puebla earthenware industry alive.

Talavera pottery became a souvenir appreciated by visitors. In addition, it required tiles for construction.

The historical value of the Talavera pottery

During the 1960s American archeology took a special interest in white neo-Hispanic earthenware.

Maiolica became a chronological "marker" to interpret the historical development of ancient settlements in Hispanic America.

John Goggin's research developed the archaeological typologies of the New World.

Also, important sequences, such as Kathleen Deagan's, are mainly integrated by Puebla Talavera pottery.

New colors for Talavera pottery

In addition to history, the 20th century rescued the elements of the style of the Puebla Talavera pottery itself. One aspect that still remains is the five traditional colors: blue, green, yellow, orange and black.

The modern designs were mixed with reminiscences of the European earthenware of times past, such as the English or Alcora earthenware.

However, Mexican maiolicas adopted their own characteristics, defined for reasons of traditional and nationalist styles.

A unique material in the world

On September 11, 1997, Talavera pottery obtained the Designation of Origin of the State of Mexico.

This protects its process and the qualities of the inputs used in its manufacture.

In addition to enamel and pigments for decoration, processing of the clay is essential. Each piece of Talavera pottery retains a distinctive seal, such as the mold prints that only result from authentic craftsmanship.

An inventive tradition

The decor has been influenced by Hispanic, Italian, Oriental and Nationalist influences. At the end of the 20th century, artisans have been influenced by contemporary art.

Preserving processes, quality in decorative materials and colors, has not been an obstacle to inventiveness.

Today's potters have adapted the old forms to new needs, thus generating original forms.

Creation is a constant in the pottery guild. Every trend and every emerging custom results in a practical response.

There is no impossible way; whether desired or imagined, vessels emerge from their hands to serve and delight.
