One of the core principles at the heart of Japanese life is harmony with nature. For millennia, the people who inhabit these islands have observed the world around them and used these observations to inform the way they live, farm, hunt and build.

It’s thought people first arrived in Japan around 40,000 years ago. At that time, the islands were rich in plant and animal life, making them ideal for the settlers arriving from further afield. All of the groups that came to Japan brought their own unique cultures and traditions. These in turn have fed into Japanese culture and shaped the country we see today.
