Located behind the Açude Cocorobó (Dam), the Serra do Cocorobó (Hill Range) is the highest point in the region of Canudos, Bahia, and it can be seen from anywhere in the city.

Since he filmed his first short film, “Marimbás”, in 1963, Vladimir Herzog longed to direct a feature film about Antônio Conselheiro. The project began to take shape in February 1975 after a trip to the region.

In 1897, in northern Bahia, the village of Canudos was a focal point of popular resistance against high taxes and the Republic. The riot was organized by all residents of the village, which had about 20.000 inhabitants, led by Antônio Conselheiro, from Ceará.
