Introducing Taxi and Private Hire

Did you know Transport for London is responsible for licensing all London taxi drivers and vehicles, private hire operators, and drivers and vehicles?

In 2000, TfL took on the responsibilities of the Public Carriage Office. For over 150 years, this body had regulated the taxicab trade in London.

Protecting People

Our aim is to protect customers, and ensure vehicles are safe, accessible and meet strict environmental standards

We’re responsible for licensing all London taxi drivers and vehicles, and private hire operators. A huge part of this is the famous 'Knowledge' exam that black cab drivers must pass.

Regulated Fares

We also set requirements and standards for licensing, set regulated taxi fares, and work with boroughs to appoint taxi ranks across London

We work closely with the taxi and private hire trades, the Metropolitan Police Service and the City of London Police to ensure the safety of passengers. This includes tackling touting and unlawful plying for hire.
